US: 11,500 Americans have died from gun violence this year, an average of about 115 people per day

The Louisville bank shooting is just one of the latest examples of mass gun violence in the United States. CNN bluntly stated, "This is a unique American phenomenon." According to data from the non-profit organization "Gun Violence File", as of April 10, including 398 teenagers and 71 children, 11,523 people have died of gun violence in the United States this year, an average of about 115 people per day. Among them, 378 people died in shooting incidents involving the police, 409 people died in accidental firearms, and 57% of the dead died by suicide, that is, on average, about 66 people shot themselves every day. Most of the shooting deaths occurred in Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Illinois and Louisiana.

According to US media reports, the Louisville bank shooting was the 146th mass shooting and the 15th mass killing in the United States this year. According to the standards of the US media and related research institutions, a single killing that kills four or more victims can be defined as a "mass killing." An incident in which four or more people are killed or injured is defined as a "mass shooting." Mass shootings in the United States this year have left 209 dead and 563 wounded.

Statistics from the "Gun Violence File" show that since 2014, more than 39,000 people have died from gun violence in the United States every year. Among them, in the three years from 2016 to 2018, the number of deaths due to gun violence in the United States exceeded 50,000 each year. Last year, there were 44,310 gun violence-related deaths in the United States.

The American VOX website reported on the 10th that the number of gun violence deaths in the United States far exceeds that of any other high-income country. Specific data show that the gun homicide rate in the United States is 26 times that of other high-income countries, and the gun suicide rate is nearly 12 times higher. The VOX website reported that the tragedy of the mass shooting in the United States has something to do with politics, culture and law.

According to the VOX website, Americans own a large number of guns, and due to the proliferation of the black market, it is difficult to grasp the exact number of private guns. According to a study in 2018, there are about 390 million private guns in the United States, which is about 120.5 guns per 100 people, and the proportion of private guns is the highest in the world. Data show that guns in the United States are highly concentrated in the hands of a small number of households. A joint survey by Harvard University and Northeastern University in 2016 found that 3% of American households own half of the guns in the United States, and each "super gun household" owns an average of 17 guns. According to a 2021 Gallup survey, 42% of American households own guns. Researchers believe there is a clear relationship, even causation, between gun ownership rates and gun violence in the United States. States with weaker gun control laws have higher rates of gun homicides and suicides.

The report also mentioned that as of now, self-defense has become the number one reason for Americans to own guns. In addition, the gun culture in the United States makes it more difficult to explore policies to address gun violence in the wake of mass shootings.
